How to check your credit score?

Whatever your reason for wanting to know your credit score, whether it’s moving to a new house or having been declined, it’s always good to know how you score.

If it’s good, you can sit back and relax, knowing you’re doing a great job. If there’s room for improvement, it’s best to act early, taking proactive steps to improve so that when you need credit you can get it at the best rate – the lower your score, the more you pay – it’s that simple!

Long gone are the days of having to pay to get your score, or even for that matter having it negatively impact it! That said, bear in mind that you actually have three credit scores, with Experian, Equifax and Transunion each providing different interpretations of your financial past.

There are lots of places where you can get your credit score for free.

Experian

Experian is considered the UK’s most trusted, used by the majority of lenders in making lending decisions. They profess to never show results based on the commissions they stand to gain, instead putting the best results right at the top.

Equifax

With the first 30 days, Equifax offers the ability to understand your credit file in detail. They also offer a nifty feature to alert you if the suspect your financial details being used by fraudsters.

ClearScore

Available in the Apple AppStore and Google Play Store, the ClearScore app makes it simple for you to see the financial information lenders use to make decisions about you and actively manage your score.

Credit Kudos

Credit Kudos harnesses financial data through Open Banking to make better, fairer credit decisions.

Checkmyfile

The UK’s most detailed online credit report, allowing you to see your credit data from Experian, Equifax, Transunion and Credit all in one place.

Credit Karma

Used by over 3 million users to date, Credit Karma uses Transunion to provide your score, housed in a clean app that provides recommendations for product providers, such as a credit card, making a small commission if you sign up.
